Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and given more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the protest called by his child.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on social media on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the potential of his move to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a background of arranging to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the US embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is located around 13km from his dwelling.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader President Trump, leading him to impose a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being held in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that he be authorized to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he required regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

He was found guilty of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which involved plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. His successor was took office without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, thousands of his followers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the capital, the capital city.

The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to step in, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
