European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to reduce security grants to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge stated the case was “another example” of tying federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an active border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept dozens of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, after concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
