Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that patients who stop using popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users purchasing these treatments should be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to starting mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections explains the heightened weight return.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," said an individual.

The struggle is compounded if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
